The Kingdom of Swaziland (population 1.1m), a small, landlocked country in southern Africa was bordered by South Africa on three sides and Mozambique to the east, with Mbabane as its administrative capital. At the start of the 21st century, the country had the highest incidence per head of population of HIV/Aids in the world and and high levels of poverty mainly in rural areas where 75 per cent of the population lived.
