Heather in bloom on the inner Hebridean island of Easdale on Scotland's west coast. The west coast of Scotland lay on the Gulf Stream which brought moist, tropical air up from the Caribbean across the Atlantic. This allowed a rich variety of flora and fauna to thrive in what would otherwise have been a hostile environment for some species of flowers and plants.
