46 imagesNon-League Day was set up by James Doe in 2010 as a social media experiment, after being inspired by a pre-season trip to Devon to watch Queens Park Rangers play at Tavistock. It has now grown to become an annual part of the football calendar, backed by Premier League and Football League clubs, MPs, celebrities, media organisations, charities and most importantly the non-League clubs themselves and the fans who turn up on the day. Always scheduled to coincide with an international break, Non-League Day provides a platform for clubs to promote the importance of affordable volunteer-led community football while giving fans across the country the chance to show support for their local non-League side. For the last two decades, photographer Colin McPherson has been chronicling the ups-and-downs of non-League teams in England on assignment for When Saturday Comes magazine. His assignments have taken him across the country, focusing on the vast variety clubs who play at the levels below the Football League. Following decades of decline and the effects of the Covid pandemic, non-League football is having a resurgence, with attendances on the up as people look to affordable football within their local communities for Saturday afternoon entertainment. 199 imagesA selection of photographs looking at the COVID-19 measures put in place at non-League football grounds in the north of England from September 2020, when spectators were allowed to return to games up until the beginning of January 2021 when a new national lockdown was imposed in England to prevent the spread of the virus, which closed down football at Level 7 and below (six divisions down from the Premier League). Spectators had been allowed into games as long as clubs put in place measures to make their grounds Covid safe. This involved spectators registering entry via scanning a QR code on their phone, or leaving their phone number and name for track and trace. Players were restricted from using dugouts and teams came on to the pitch via separate entrances from the dressing rooms. Bottles of hand sanitiser gel and advice and warning signs proliferated, and whilst supporters could use social clubs (as long as masks were worn) and take alcohol in to the grounds, they had to remain socially distanced from other fans. Most clubs had one-way systems to guide supporters in and out of the grounds, but from mid-October, away fans were banned in many fixtures which involved teams from different areas. Finally, the UK Government banned the staging of matches below the 'elite' level for an indefinite period, effective 1st January, 2021, with the measures finally being relaxed at this level in June, 2021.
