A porter carrying bags of fish from the quayside at Manaus fish market to waiting merchant's vehicles for distribution and sale across the city with a population of 2.2m. 2005 saw the worst drought in the region for 60 years which affected fish sizes and catches. Declining catches were also blamed on the loss of habitats in the rivers Amazon and Rio negro due to deforestation of the Amazonian rainforest basin.
