The opera house in the centre of Manaus, the principal city in the Amazon. The opera house was built in the 1920s at a time when the city experienced an economic boom due to the rubber exporting industry. At that time Manaus was known as the 'Paris of the Amazon' but when the rubber industry declined so did the fortunes of the city whose population grew steadily to over two million by the end of the millennium.
