School pupils waiting on the pier at Fordlandia for ferry boats to take them home to outlying villages on the Tapajos river. This village was one of a number on the banks of the Tapajos river which saw investment in services such as electricity and running water. Access to the village which lay in the heart of the Amazonian rainforest basin was still by unpaved dirt roads from Highway BR163.
