A barman standing at the hatch of his bar which doubles as a village shop in a small settlement by the Tapajos river. The Floresta Nacional do Tapajos (FLONA), a 6500 km2 protected reserve, was home to several small communities which lived on the banks of the Rio Tapajos. Most communities did not have electricity or running water and access to the villages was by unpaved dirt roads from Santarem and Highway BR163.
