A passenger with a cow disembarks from a ferry crossing the Tapajos river from the town of Itaituba. The town was connected to the interior of the Amazonian basin by a series of unpaved road, such as the Transamazon and BR163 highways. The area surrounding the highways was the front line in the battle between local communities and environmentalists who tried to prevent to spread of rainforest destruction by illegal loggers and companies which bought and seized land for use in cattle ranching and growing soy beans for export from Brazil via the port at Santarem.
