Peat Cutting (50 images)

Two views of peat cutting in the Western Isles in the 1990s.

On both occasions, I chanced upon men engaging in the traditional annual ritual of cutting and stacking peat for fuels for their homes. These images, from North Uist and Lewis depict a scene that had barely changed for centuries. The early-summer gathering on the vast bogs, the patience, skill and camaraderie and the sense of achievement when the work was finally done.
