Scotland's Salmon Netsmen - colour { 77 images } Created 15 Nov 2008
Catching the Tide, a long-term project during which I documented the work of Scotland's last remaining salmon net fishermen between 1996 and 2007.
The once-thriving Scottish salmon netting industry fell into decline in the 1970s and 1980s when the numbers of fish caught reduced due to environmental and economic reasons. In 2018, a three-year ban was imposed by the Scottish Government on the advice of scientists to try to boost dwindling stocks which anglers and conservationists blamed on netsmen. With the moratorium being extended indefinitely, it is now widely accepted that salmon net fishing in Scotland will no long take place and will become a thing of the past.
