A silver statue to Pope John Paul II by a main road on the outskirts of the city of Kosice, in the Slovak Republic which were built during the communist era. The city, which lies in eastern Slovakia is the country's second largest after Bratislava and has been announced as European Capital of Culture in 2013, along with Marseille, France. Kosice was the seat of the Kosice Region, home to the Slovak Constitutional Court, three universities and many museums, galleries and theaters as well as an important industrial center.
