Crofter Alex George Mackay who has been farming for 50 years at Melness on the Kyle of Tongue in Sutherland on Scotland's north coast. Crofting was a traditional way of life for many people in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. It was a system of small-scale agriculture where the individual farmers grew small amounts of crops and kept sheep, cattle and other livestock in small-holdings.
