Scotland's new Parliament building, situated at the foot of the historic Royal Mile adjacent to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen's official residence in Scotland, in the final stages of completion before the building's royal opening on October 9, 2004. The controversial project, three years behind schedule and almost 10 times over the original budget, was designed by the late Catalan architect Enric Miralles.
